Google "dead rock-star database," and quite a few sites dedicated to the premature passing of musicians will pop up. Heart attack is No. 1 with 42, two ahead of drug overdose. Popular music has had its share of early deaths from cancer: [...] Yauch seemed unique to me, for I couldn't think of a youth-oriented pop star who died at such a young age from a cause that couldn't be classified as "accident," "murder" or "cautionary tale." The passing of a beloved musician from one's generation is wont to cause reflection because music resonates for longer than, say, a movie. The Beasties made music for parents to detest and for kids to digest, and they did so in a manner that resulted both in credibility and commercial viability. Yauch's death provoked an outpouring of remembrances among people my age, which would be middle Gen X. Several friends and family members toward the back end of the generation, the late 1970s, seemed unmoved.
